This book is the story of setting the new agenda for this unique development of innovation in cultural engagement at academic and communities levels. It is written by a historian as well as the Founding Principal and Vice-Chancellor of Al-Maktoum Institute, In the words of the author ‘It documents this distinguished history of achievements and contributions for our time and for the coming generations to prove that there is nothing impossible in this life.’ The aims of this book are to provide:

i) a historical document, providing a detailed record on these important achievements

ii) an open and accessible introduction to the work the Author has undertaken through the Institute

iii) a possible model for future developments, offered for those who wish to take forward this agenda and possibly implement some of its ideas, aims and ambitions.



Within an introduction and a conclusion, this book has been divided into three Parts with eleven chapters. Part One, Setting the Scene, includes the introduction and Chapter One on Outstanding Start. Part Two, Setting the New Agenda for Cultural Engagements at the Academic Level, has six chapters. Chapter Two, The success and niche of the Institute, Chapter Three, Unique Programmes in the Study of Islam and Muslims in Scotland, Chapter Four, Creating and Enhancing the Learning Environment and Community, Chapter Five, Development and Enhancement of Research Culture, Chapter Six, International Academic Links and collaborations Chapter Seven, Achievements: Achieving Academic Excellence. Part Three, Setting the New Agenda for Cultural Engagement at the Communities Level, includes four chapters. Chapter Eight, Serving Local and National Communities, Chapter Nine, Serving the International Communities, Chapter Ten, The United Arab Emirates and Scotland as an Example, Chapter Eleven, Annual Summer Schools,



Professor Abd al-Fattah El-Awaisi is the Founding Principal and Vice-Chancellor of Al-Maktoum Institute. He is also the founder of the new field of inquiry of Islamicjerusalem Studies, the first Chair in Islamicjerusalem Studies, and is the Founding Director of the Centre for Islamicjerusalem Studies. He is a British Arab, and has an excellent record of research publication in both English and Arabic, most recently a groundbreaking monograph titled Introducing Islamicjerusalem. He has been studying, teaching and researching in the Study of Islam and Muslims at both Arab and British universities for 30 years. He also received his training in Political Sciences, History, Middle Eastern Studies, and Islamic Studies; and taught for a number of years in History departments, Religious Studies department, Arabic and Islamic Studies department, and the Study of Islam and Muslims Department.
